Pregnancy Related Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) is an umbrella term used to describe pain experienced around the pelvic area during and after pregnancy.

Pregnancy causes changes in the body such as postural changes, weight change, muscle fatigue, tension and altered patterns of movement. These changes naturally amplifies the sensitivity of our nervous system - prompting a more protective bodily response, resulting often in muscle soreness, tension, and restricted movement (pregnancy related pelvic girdle pain.

Symptoms can be felt all around the pelvic, hip and lower back area. The pain can be felt in some or all of these areas and it can be in one or both sides. These symptoms can range from annoying to debilitating and is commonly described as being exhausting and very upsetting.

Pelvic Girdle Pain can affect your ability to enjoy your pregnancy, care for your family, work, exercise and take pleasure in social activities as it can greatly affect your quality of life.

Pelvic Girdle Pain in pregnancy is common affecting 1 in 5 pregnant women. But it’s not normal and you don’t have to put up with it. In most cases, physiotherapy can relieve pain and help you manage the symptoms so you can enjoy this exciting time of your life as much as possible.

Common symptoms

Pain at the front or back of the pelvis

Pain in the lower back, buttock, groin or hips

Pain when you walk

Pain when you sit or stand & when getting in and out of the car

Pain when you get dressed

Pain ascending and descending stairs

Pain when rolling over in bed

Difficulty moving your knees apart

Increased pain with more activity

Clicking or grinding in the pelvic area which you may hear or feel.

Possible causes of pelvic girdle pain

Pregnancy and childbirth

Previous pregnancies

Postural changes due to weight gain and baby bump

Poor muscular control (weakness or tension) & support of the pelvic joints

Previous back or pelvic pain
